Where Do Our Self-Limiting Beliefs Come From?
Because it has got to come from somewhere, right?
Do they come from our experiences?
Do they come from what people tell us?
Well, I’m here to tell you that it comes from both.
Our experiences that we encounter throughout our lives and what our family and friends tell us play a part in how we perceive ourselves.
If a lot of your experiences include you being put down and being told you are not worthy, then of course, you will think you are not worthy.
These experiences and statements turn into beliefs that we will have about ourselves.
And these beliefs become so ingrained in us that we will literally refuse to believe otherwise.
We all deserve to be happy, loved, and respected.
But we have to believe that first ourselves.
I know I was not even aware that self-limiting beliefs existed until I had read a post on what they are.
If you are unfamiliar with the term self-limiting beliefs, they are the beliefs that we have about ourselves that limit our capabilities.
For instance, it took me longer to launch my blog because I believed that people wouldn’t like what I had to say.
I thought that people would assume that I couldn’t possibly know what I was talking about and that I was trying to be somebody that I’m not.
Well, I learned that belief about myself is not true.
From the comments I receive on my blog to the interaction I get on social media, I learned that people do like what I have to say.
They genuinely enjoy the content that I put out.
Which makes me feel even more confident and motivates me to put more content out.
But the crazy part is that I didn’t believe this at first.
I was so hung up on thinking that people wouldn’t like what I had to say, so this belief held me back for a while.
6 months to be exact.
That is what self-limiting beliefs are capable of.
They can prevent you from pursuing your dreams and aspirations.
Or even taking a promotion or a better opportunity.
It is as if we tell ourselves that we are not worthy of these things, and it will keep us from doing it.
I know that I’m not the only one who deals with self-limiting beliefs.
A lot of us usually have beliefs about ourselves that are not true.
Some of us think that we are not pretty or handsome enough.
Not strong enough.
Or even smart enough.
But then we do something that proves us wrong.
We take the risk that we are scared to do and find out that it wasn’t that bad.
In fact, we wished that we would have done it sooner.
There is something so freeing when you finally take the leap that you were scared to do at first.
But what how do we get to that point?
How do we get to point of wanting to take the risk and realize that these limiting beliefs that we have about ourselves are not true?
Well, I wrote a post on how to break free from your self-limiting beliefs.
In that post, I dive more into where self-limiting beliefs come from with examples and a step-by-step process that will help you shake those beliefs.
You can check out that post below.
