Do I Need To Babyproof My Home?
Because I need to know if it's necessary.
I mean it makes sense right?
When babies are mobile and walking around, they are going to start to figure out how things work.
Such as opening cabinets and doors.
Or that they can put things in the small holes of the outlets in the walls.
Obviously there many bad things that can open if these areas are left unattended and unsupervised.
So the obvious choose would be to make sure that the areas in your home that you don’t want your baby to mess with are safe and protected.
I know that as a first-time mom, the answer to this question is an automatic yes.
There was no way I wasn’t going to make sure that my house is safe and secure for my baby.
And I did just that by buying all the things I could in the babyproofing aisle in the stores.
I had the outlet covers, foam corners, cabinet locks, door locks, stove knob covers, and even toilet locks.
Whatever was in that aisle, I wanted to make sure I had.
And I wound up only using half of that.
By the time, I got my house child-proof, my daughter had figured out how to maneuver the safety devices so they became pointless.
In my opinion, it felt like a waste.
Especially because I had gotten a lot of things that I didn’t use.
I’m not saying this to say not babyproof because there are definitely certain areas within our home that I want to babyproof to ensure the safety of my baby.
I am just thinking about it differently this time around.
As I have embarked on this motherhood journey for the second time, I’m just choosing to be more mindful and only babyproof what I know is needed.
Which is primarily the cabinets, doors, and stairs.
These are the areas in my home that I know I want to make sure are secure, because this where accidents are more likely to occur.
I don’t even want to imagine the bad things that could happen if my baby were to accidentally drink some cleaning fluid.
Or worse, accidentally fall down the stairs.
I think it’s really important that babies explore their environments so they can begin to understand how things functions.
But I want her to be able to do it safely without worry about her injuring herself.
Part of a baby’s development is dependent on their ability to be able to explore.
So we should do our best to give them the space and opportunity to explore safely.
If you are interested in the things that I used, I wrote a blog post on some of babyproofing essentials that I used with my first baby.
Now that my second baby is mobile, I have found myself pulling back out these essentials so that she can move around safely.
You can check that out through the link below.
I will catch you all next time!
