Can You Really Prepare For Being A First Time Mom?
Because I feel like I did everything and still wasn’t prepared.
I read the books.
Read the blogs.
Watched the Youtube videos.
And motherhood still blindsided me.
The moment that I held my daughter for the first time and looked down at her, everything that I was trying to learn about parenting all the months prior just went out the window.
The only thing that I knew for certain was that this little girl was mine.
And I was going to do everything in my power to ensure that she had everything she needed and try to be the best mom I can be.
Everyone talks about the sleep deprivation that occurs during the newborn phase, but nothing can really prepare for that.
You can’t control the number of times your baby wakes up at night.
And the majority of the time, it's to feed and feel the comfort that only momma can provide.
After all, they were snuggled up in your tummy for all those months, so you can’t expect them to just sleep in a big crib with nothing to snuggle up against from the get go.
I never thought that I would be the type to bed-share with a baby, but yet I found myself doing it.
And not just for a few days either.
I’m talking months.
And even to this day, every once and a while my daughter, who is a toddler now, will still crawl back in the bed with us.
Night wakings don’t just go away, they just become less with time.
Something else I wasn’t prepared for as a first time mom was breastfeeding.
You think it is something that should be natural and easy, right?
But you quickly learn that it is not.
If you have never breastfed a baby before, you have no idea if they are latching correctly or if you are even holding them in a comfortable position for them to nurse.
And you definitely don’t know the type of commitment that breastfeeding entails.
Babies typically eat every 2–3 hours so if you are a breastfeeding momma, then that means that every 2–3 hours, you need to be close to your baby to nurse them.
If you are not feeding them straight from the breast, then that means pumping every 2–3 hours.
Breastfeeding is not for the weak, that is for sure.
So no matter what you think being a parent will be like, it will only be what it is once you actually become one.
And begin taking care of that beautiful baby that you brought into this world.
I know I experienced several different types of emotions when I became a mom for the first time.
Those emotions ranged from joy to even sadness.
I wrote a blog post on those feelings I was experiencing and what you can expect when becoming a first time mom.
You can check out that post through the link below.
I will catch you all next time!
